In 2015, a number of arrests were made to different UEFA officials after it was discovered that they had been involved with fraud, bribery and money laundering. One of these officials was the president of UEFA, Michel Platini.

Following these issues that were uncovered by the United States Attorney and federal prosecutors, it was later on revealed that Michel Platini was suspended for 90 days by FIFA’s Ethics Committee.

As time passed on and more investigations were taking place and being completed, Platini as well as other figures received further sanctions and bans. Platini along with Slepp Blatter were found guilty of a £1.3 million of disloyal payment.

Blatter had to step down from his presidential role in FIFA and Michel Platini is expected to do the same thing during an upcoming extraordinary general meeting in September and now a number of candidates have been popping up as to who is going to be selected as the next UEFA president and someone who has emerged as a favorite is the chief of the Slovenian Football Association Aleksander Ceferin.

The general secretay Theodore Theodoridis, the Dutch FA chief Michael van Praag and the Spanish football chief Angel Maria Villar are the favorites of taking up the presidential role of UEFA and replace Michel Platini but Aleksander Ceferin is someone who is emerging as another realistic and plausible candidate.

Aleksander Ceferin is being identified as one of the most talented leaders in east European football who has participated in the board of Slovenian champions Olimpija Ljubljana back in 2006 and became the president of the Slovenian Football Association in 2011.

Slovenian Football has recently been praised by Gianni Infantino who replaced Sepp Blatter at the presidential position of FIFA and Infantino stated that: “Everyone working in Slovenian football has shown what can be done if the work is professional, passionate and responsible.”
