Eli Guttman is optimistic that Israel would be able to make it to the main draw of the Euro Cup 2016.
Israel has not taken part in any big international competition in the last 5 decades or so and that is a very long time.
Guttman, who has been in charge of the side for quite a while now, reckons the wait can come to an end next year as the current Israeli side is good enough to clear the Euro qualifiers.
According to Guttman, finishing at the first position in Group B is probably not possible for his team, but, the second and the third positions in the group are definitely up for grabs.
The strongest team in Israel’s group is probably Belgium. Wales is not that bad a team either. The other three teams are Cyprus, Andorra and Bosnia-Herzegovina. It’s a pretty decent group.
Speaking to the reporters last month about Euro qualification, Guttman said, “There is going to be a very tough fight for no. 2 and no. 3.”
“As far as we are concerned, I think we are capable to finish at no. 3 which would get us to the play offs. We can even finish at no. 2 if we play well. There are certainly some good teams in the group, but, we are confident about ourselves.”
When asked which team, he reckons, would end up as the topper in Group B at the end of the qualification round, the 56-year old said, “I think it would be Belgium. They are in some other league. But, there is not much difference between the remaining teams in terms of quality. So, it’s going to be pretty interesting.”
Israel has to play against Belgium in March and October next year.
