In their latest journey at the international stage, Slovenia sustained a 3-1 defeat against Ukraine which left the team of Srecko Katanec out of the 2016 Euro’s and unable to make it past the group stages as they needed that victory in order to win their play-off’s and advance into the next rounds of the tournament.

This play-off match was played at the Ljudski Vrt stadium in Slovenia back in November 17 of 2015 and it was a particularly disappointing match for the Slovenian national team not only because they were knocked out of the 2016 Euro’s but especially because Bostjan Cesar gave the Slovenian team an early lead in the first half which gave his teammates hopes of overturning the 2-0 deficit that they had after having lost against Ukraine in the 1rst leg.

Even with the early lead that Slovenia had, they couldn’t add any further goals despite all their attempts. What really crushed the dreams of Slovenia advancing through was what occurred in the last few minutes of the match when Miso Brecko received a red card and leaving his squad with only 10 men on the field.

Ukraine capitalized on their numerical advantage and it only took them 8 minutes for them tie up the scoreboard 1-1. The 2nd and last goal of the game arrived at the 97th minute when Andriy Yarmolenko slipped the ball into an empty net and this goal was enough for Yarmolenko to make history with Ukraine as this was the very first time that the national side had qualified for a European Championship while Slovenia still remained without luck.
